Soroti Municipal Secondary School/Beacon of Hope College is a coed mixed boarding/day school for approximately 700 students from Senior One to Senior Six. Among the top schools in the Teso sub-region, the Head Teacher, Mr. Rogers Mboizi, is spearheading a drive for continual improvement. The school is growing academically stronger every year. 2024 UCE results speak for themselves. 125 candidates stood, and 125 passed with result one.
Established in 2006 in the aftermath of Uganda's civil war, Beacon of Hope initially welcomed 260 children from internally displaced persons (IDP) camps in Northern Uganda. Many of these students arrived malnourished, having never used basic amenities like towels or shoes. Most were orphans, former child soldiers, abductees, or survivors of rape camps. Though the last child soldiers graduated in 2014, Beacon of Hope continues its mission to support vulnerable children through an extensive scholarship program tailored for students from rural, subsistence agriculture communities.
Soroti Municipal SS (Beacon of Hope) has focused on hands-on, project-based learning in the rural classroom for many years. The school pioneers a STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math) program, in which students have the chance to participate in a variety of challenging courses and co-curricular offerings. With a dedicated team of 28 teachers and staff providing personalized attention, Beacon of Hope has seen remarkable success. In 2024, the Music, Dance and Drama team received regional recognition for creatively representing cultural heritage in music and dance. The Robotics Team was selected to represent Uganda in an international VEX competition in the Dallas, Texas, USA in May, 2025.
Academically, Beacon of Hope students consistently achieve high marks and soar. In sports, robotics, entrpreneurship and the arts, students learn lifetime skills about teamwork, beauty, creativity, purpose outside the classroom and relevance in the real world. In chapel talks, Sunday worship and voluntary Scripture Union, students are inspired to live out lives of love, prayer, service, practicing the peace that passes understanding as they pursue God's glory.
Soroti Municipal SS accepts new students in Senior One (S1) and Senior Five (S5), and is currently accepting enrollment and scholarship applications for the 2025 school year. The competitive full ride scholarship program is supported by national and international donors. Scholarship places for S1 and S5 are limited to the numbers supported by donations in the prior year, and are selected on the basis of need and merit, without respect to tribe, gender, or religious affiliation. To those who donate, we cannot thank you enough! Many children in the Soroti region lack the funds to attend a rigorous university preparatory school. Early marriage, frequent food shortages, endemic malaria, and an 80% school dropout rate before seventh grade underscore the challenges students confront. Scholarships cover all aspects of student life, including school fees, lodging, meals, textbooks, extracurricular activities, and essential toiletries.
